This
book, as the author states in his Preface, is not a train spotter's rosy eyed view
of the railways of our youth, but an attempt to put the story of the railways in
Britain in context with the impact they had on the social fabric of the
country. It is a highly readable book and presents a - for me - new look at how the railways fit into the society I was born into and grew up in.
An interesting and thought provoking book for any student or enthusiast for our railways.
